A Berger-Levy Energy Efficient Neuron Model with Unequal Synaptic Strengths

چکیده
How neurons in the cerebral cortex process and transmit information is a long-standing question in systems neuroscience. To analyze neuronal activity from an information-energy efficiency standpoint, Berger and Levy calculated the maximum Shannon mutual information transfer per unit of energy expenditure of an idealized integrateand-fire (IIF) neuron whose excitatory synapses all have the same weight. Here, we extend their IIF model to a biophysically more realistic one in which synaptic weights are unequal. Using information theory, random Poisson measures, and the maximum entropy principle, we show that the probability density function (pdf) of interspike interval (ISI) duration induced by the bits per joule (bpj) maximizing pdf fΛ(λ) of the excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) intensity remains equal to the delayed gamma distribution of the IIF model. We then show that, in the case of unequal weights, fΛ(·) satisfies an inhomogeneous Cauchy-Euler equation with variable coefficients for which we provide the general solution form.

Extending Berger-Levy Information-Energy Efficiency Neuron Theory to a Model with Unequal Synaptic Weights
How neurons in the cerebral cortex process and transmit information is a long-standing question in systems neuroscience. To analyze neuronal activity from an information-energy efficiency standpoint, Berger and Levy (2010) calculated the maximum Shannon mutual information rate per energy expenditure, based on an idealized integrate-and-_re (IIF) model where the excitatory synapses have the same...

We extend to the GIG case the Schrödinger-WienerGerstein-Mandelbrot real neuron model of the conditional probability density function (pdf) for the random time, T , that it takes the neuron’s post-synaptic potential to reach the spiking threshold when the realization of the random afferent excitation rate, Λ, assumes the value λ. Then we analyze how to maximize I(Λ;T ) per joule of energy the n...
متن کاملRole of STDP in regulation of neural timing networks in human: a simulation study
Many physiological events require an accurate timing signal, usually generated by neural networks called central pattern generators (CPGs). On the other hand, properties of neurons and neural networks (e.g. time constants of neurons and weights of network connections) alter with time, resulting in gradual changes in timing of such networks. Recently, a synaptic weight adjustment mechanism has b...

Abstract: Neural information processing within neural microcircuitry is determined by the balance between excitation and inhibition (E/I balance). Toward understanding it better from an information-energy efficiency standpoint, we earlier calculated the maximum Shannon mutual information transfer per unit of energy expenditure of an idealized integrate-and-fire (IIF) neuron all of whose synapse...
